Pendant lights over a dining table work best when the layout is planned from the table outward. Example: three 10-inch pendants set 24 inches on center occupy 58 inches: 10 + (3 − 1) × 24. Above an 84-inch table, a centered row leaves 13 inches at each end. That result is not an automatic approval; it is a dimension you can tape out and judge.

Set the hanging height with a sightline test

For an 8-foot ceiling, 30 to 36 inches between the tabletop and the lowest part of a dining fixture is a commonly published starting range. Treat it as a mock-up position, not a promise that every fixture or household should use the same drop.

Cut a paper or cardboard outline of the fixture and hang it temporarily at the planned lowest point. Then check it while:
